from the buried treasure of family artifacts came a collection of slides from my grandmother's trip to Hong Kong in the late 1940s. treasure. buried. the slides were a lovely little pocket size with a built in sepia that made developing them seem almost unnecessary. almost.

here they are now: developed at slide scale and put into tiny wearable tin chambers. just perfect enough for my hipster sister to wear on her first trip to china next year.

i'm not really sure what i'm doing actually. open a book, find a thing. open another book, find not one thing. open six books and throw them around the cauldron until the next book is opened and i find another thing. then lay the pieces down on canvas. move them up, layer. unlayer. start over. more books, lots of cutting, more layers. less layers. somethings all over the floor, some other things now glue. i've committed to a thing. good. paint. charcoal, scratch that, paint over. another something, sticky layer. its starting to converge, a something is there. more paint, more sticky. feathers. something else. layers, final somethings. ink on the edging.

and then there's this thing. i didn't know that i wanted it. i didn't set out to do it. it happened one by one. layer by something, sticky by something else. paint, and omission. revision and ink.

when i stand back and wonder, it looks like on purpose. like some great design concocted in advance. but i know better. i've no idea what i'm doing.

i just like knowing something happens all the same.

my canvases are getting smalller! i've been lost in a series of weelings for a few days now. they're my mini collages for the lovers of little and they hang together in threes.

i love wandering with them. i can experiment often and quickly and in the process get to use up many of my little scraps. in fact, they sit on a sturdy background of one of my favorite scrap materials: a collection of formica samples from season's past.

i've been challenging myself lately to only use what's exactly at my finger tips: no digging in my ephemera treasure trove for that one image or pulling out that perfect tool. just see what's in front of me - and use it.

here's what i've come up with:

voyager series: motion, mind, and light.

elements series: wind, sea, and land

cupid series: song, sight, touch

perfume bottle fed series: made, clutched, melodies

ants go marching series: gold, little, big

perennial series: collect, my heart is, tenderly

i went on a walk today with my best friend. it was a sunny misty warm spring day here. and the earth was soft and full. we climbed hills and splashed in puddles and heard three different flocks of birds chirp their little heads off. and we saw two white tailed deer who swam through a just-thawed pond in the middle of a forest that had wild mushrooms and deep green moss everywhere. and we hugged twenty-two lambs, and brought the littlest one out into the sunshine to smell the day and let it hug her back. and by the end of the walk we were simply drunk with happiness.

i love being little so much it hurts.

time at the farm is always so wonderful. we have completed another year of sheep shearing -- 40 ewes this time! and the sea of fleece is absolute magic to gaze upon.

we're moving offices at work and everyone is cleaning out their respective cupboards and drawers. happily for me, it is an office chock full of fancy paper, photo books, trinkets and samples. cleaning house ended up being an early christmas. we had dumpsters in the hallway that i dove into headfirst.

i recovered the most remarkable items: photo books; paper samples of all different colors and weights; fonts with gorgeous type faces; and so many pieces of cardboard i'll never run out of canvases.

this 'eagle tote' was remade from a giant banner of past presidents that was displayed sometime last year. as it is now outdated, someone thought it was fit for a landfill. i wasn't convinced. the colors work beautifully with some upholstery fabric i recovered one summer working at an interior design firm. pattern? watch your stapler...

my pick for book of the whole wide world is frederick by leo lionni. if you haven't read it yet, please please do. you'll be changed, and validated, and oh yes there is hope for the world.

taking my cue from dear little frederick, i spent today soaking in, breathing in, letting in. stockpiling for later.

sitting under a tree i think is magic. the view looking up is what i get thirsty for when i'm up to my eyeballs in snow. can you even believe this green? if i were a leaf i would fly.

i woke up today and the world was bigger than my shoulders wanted to carry. it was a familiar feeling. like in first grade when mrs. libby asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up.

bytheway, is there a deadline for that?

my response to dear mrs. libby is pictured at right. what joan-of-arc doesn't want to be alice-in-wonderland, and vice versa? i'm feeling greedy and want to be both.
